Lazy vs Early

Progress isn’t made by early risers. It’s made by lazy men trying to find easier ways to do something.

—Robert Heinlein

I’ve always been lazy – and been proud of that. I believed that being lazy forced me to act smart, act efficient. I derided waste – of energy and time.

More recently, I’ve become an early riser. Literally, not metaphorically. I like to believe I’m still lazy. But I’m also becoming aware of my mortality. And that seems to help get up early, get started early, make most of the time1. Still not happy wasting it2.

  1. It also helps that I really like things peaceful and quiet while working, and mornings is when I get it best.
  2. Yes, I can still spend a few hours watching crap TV. But then I spend almost the same number of hours hating myself for wasting those hours. 2x waste now! So, I don’t watch hours of crap TV anymore – mostly just my favourite sports.
